True or False, a Mechanic does not need a resume to get a job? This may surprise you coming from a recruiter but it is true, Mechanics do not NEED a resume to get a job. There are lots of mechanics who have built up a great reputation and network and can get hired at a lot of different shops based on who they know.

All that being said, without a resume you are limiting your job search. Most mid-size to large companies run hiring through HR and there is no chance HR is going to hire you without a resume. If it is a small owner/operator shop or a shop where the Service Manager is responsible for hiring you can get in but if the company is much bigger you are out of luck without a resume.

You may be thinking that you don’t want to work for a big corporate company so who cares? The reason that it matters is that eventually, you are going to need to get off the floor, you need an exit strategy. Working for a large company can help by offering opportunities in parts, sales, management, training etc.

The best way to think about it is that your resume is your passport. When you want to go on vacation you do not need a passport but without one, you are limiting yourself to trips within your country. With a passport, you can go anywhere in the world.

If you believe me that a resume is helpful and you are wondering where to start, check out our resume tips. Once you have gone through the trouble of writing your resume, make life easier and keep it up to date. Too many technicians wait until they need a resume before they write one. That is the equivalent of saying let’s go on a trip on Friday and trying to renew your passport, it can take time to get it done. Also, the longer you leave it the more you can forget.

Every time you get a new job, open up the resume and add the new job, it only takes 5 minutes at the time and you will be up to date. Also, any time you complete any training course update the resume, the more often you do this the more complete your resume will be and employers, especially the big corporate kind, love to see all that training listed on your resume.
