A Millwrights Guide to Crafting Compelling Resumes

Creating a strong resume is crucial for securing top job opportunities, including those in the trades. Whether you're applying for a position as an Automotive Millwright, Construction Millwright, or Industrial Millwright, a well-crafted resume can make a significant difference.

Some millwrights might think, “I don’t have a resume; I’ve never needed one before.” While it’s true that not every job requires a resume, having one can open doors to better opportunities, especially with companies that have formal hiring processes and HR departments. Crafting a resume is straightforward and can greatly enhance your chances of landing a desirable role. Here’s a guide to best practices and examples specifically for millwright positions.

1. FORMAT

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to creating a resume, so using a Microsoft template is fine if it suits your needs. Just make sure to complete every section thoroughly.

Opt. for a clear and simple format that's easy to read. For a millwright position, focus on functionality rather than artistic design. Include essential sections like Contact Information, Employment History, and Relevant Certifications and Education.

Keep your resume to two pages or fewer. Recruiters often skim resumes quickly, so avoid overwhelming them with excessive information. Your resume’s goal is to secure an interview, not to get the job outright. Present the essentials effectively and use the interview to elaborate.

2. CONTACT INFO

Ensure all your contact details are accurate and complete. Errors like typos in your phone number or email address can cause missed opportunities. Your contact information should include:

  • Name
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number

Optional:

  • Street Address (Recommended)
  • LinkedIn Profile

Avoid Contact Info Mistakes:

An unprofessional email address or voicemail greeting can negatively impact your job prospects. Use a straightforward and professional voicemail greeting, such as: “Hi, you’ve reached Dave. I can’t take your call right now, but please leave a message, and I’ll return your call as soon as possible.”

For your email address, avoid humorous or inappropriate addresses. Instead, use a professional one like davemorleymechanic@gmail.com. If managing multiple accounts is cumbersome, consider email forwarding to simplify communication.

3. RELOCATING?

If you’re applying for jobs in a new location, clearly state your current location and your intended relocation city at the top of your application. For example, if your address is listed as Hamilton, ON, but you’re applying for jobs in Calgary, clarify this to avoid confusion.

4. WORK HISTORY

This section is critical, so maintain a clear and consistent format for readability. Provide a brief description of each company if its nature isn’t immediately clear. Include:

  • Company Name
  • Job Title
  • Accurate Employment Dates (including specific start and end months if within the last decade)

Detail your responsibilities and the equipment you worked with. Focus on recent roles and significant achievements from the past 10-15 years, especially if you have more than 20 years of experience. For newer professionals, concentrate on relevant roles and skills, omitting unrelated positions.

5. CERTIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

List all relevant training, certifications, and educational achievements that pertain to millwright roles. Exclude qualifications unrelated to the profession. Key items to include are:

  • OEM/Factory Training
  • Trade Certification
  • Commercial Driver’s License
  • Related Trades
  • Safety Training

Hobbies and Interests?

Skip the hobbies and special interests section. Keep your resume focused on your millwright experience and training.
