Why Striving for Perfection Can Undermine Good Hiring Practices

We often get caught up in the pursuit of perfection, scrutinizing every detail and striving for flawlessness. This fixation can sometimes hinder us, making us lose sight of the fact that "Good Enough" can be perfectly acceptable. Every day, shops call in with an extensive list of criteria for their plumbers, which typically looks like this:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience
  • Master certification in whatever brand they are working on
  • No Jumpy Work History
  • Great attitude
  • Lives close to the shop
  • Valid Driver’s Licenses with a clean driving record
  • Willing to accept a job offer below-market rates.

There might be a candidate who meets all of those criteria, but finding them could be a lengthy and challenging process. Meanwhile, it's important to consider the cost of leaving a position unfilled. A shortage of plumbers can lead to:

  • Turning away work
  • Paying Overtime
  • Burning out your technicians

The shortage of technicians has crippled many shops. When you turn away a customer because you can’t accommodate them, and they find a faster alternative elsewhere, they’re unlikely to come back.

There’s an old saying that you can only achieve two out of three: Fast, Cheap, or Quality. If you’re looking for a plumber who is both quick and affordable, they probably won’t offer the best quality. Conversely, finding a high-quality plumber at a low price will take time, and if you need someone who is both quick and skilled, it will come at a premium.

Consider whether you need a top-tier specialist or if a skilled general plumber will suffice. Most shops handle routine repairs that any competent technician can perform, and only occasionally require an expert diagnostic technician. My advice is to staff your shop with capable technicians who can handle standard repairs efficiently, while also hiring a few exceptional "Rockstars" to tackle more complex issues and support the team. Invest in these top-tier technicians generously—they’ll prove their worth and more through their contributions.

Avoid being understaffed while waiting for the perfect technician. Fill your shop with competent techs, and you’ll build a successful operation!
